Traffic Counting on Sycamore

by Mountain Girl ~ July 29th, 2008. Filed under: Development, Infrastructure.

cableSo I don’t know much about much, but I do know that when there is black cable stretched across a road it usually means that traffic is being counted for some reason. And there is a black cable stretched across Sycamore in the area of Mt. Washington often referred to as “The Saddle”.

Interestingly enough, that is the very area that always seems to come up when development is proposed at The Edge property. And lately there has been a lot of talk about development at The Edge property. Now this is just a guess, but perhaps someone is counting traffic because of something related to development at The Edge property.

So the question becomes…is the traffic being counted in preparation to develop the property (a fairly common practice)? or to build a case in opposition to development? Anyone have any thoughts or have any information? Inquiring minds want to know.

Based on the placement of those cables, I have a feeling that this might unfortunately be happening to build a case in opposition of development - some of those who are very opposed to development live right at the location of the cables.

one could say that the counter was put up by the developers because they are trying to prove that there is not as much traffic on Sycamore as the vocal minority might have claimed.

I can’t imagine there is that much traffic… I mean, I try to avoid using Sycamore because it’s so steep and cobblestoned. It’s harder on your car than taking one of the other side streets up to Grandview. And I always take Shiloh back from Grandview.

Carey, wyoming is the cobblestone street. Sycamore is nicely paved. I use it a good bit to go down because you don’t have to take wyoming, but not as often to come up since you have to go left or right on wyoming at that point.

Even if there are those in oppostion to a development or any development at the Edge, I believe that by now there are enough of us on the Mount who want to see that parcel developed that a few people who live in the neighborhood can not stop development of that critical site anymore.

Even on the other side of grandview (Duq Hghts) and the neighborhoods behind I know that there is a desire to see that site improved.

An effort to get support for some development (and not just the kind that the immediate neighbors want) would turn out lots of people in favor of finally getting rid of that eyesore and developing something that would make that site useful and a must see at the top of the incline.

I will be in support of Luc Desmone’s plan and hope a deal to do that development can be secured so we can fight for it.

As long as the developer has a plan that conforms to the “Grandview Public Realm” no one person and group should be allowed to stop progress!

I thought I saw those cables stretched across Wyoming Street as well. Right where the driveway (now chained) is to what used to be The Edge apartments. Maybe I was seeing things . . . but I’ll check it out on the way home tonight.

With any potential large scale development a traffic study must be conducted. This may or may not be related to the Edge but it is a sign of some possible progress!

brk_05 - just assumed it was the cobblestone street because I drove down there on Tuesday and there were cables right before you get to the incline.

If your headed to the south side or station square don’t go down Sycamore St. take another route.. there are lots of ways to get down there. Don’t ride over this traffic counter. Skew the numbers. Power to the people!

the developer of the proposed edge site has hired a firm to conduct a traffic study. the plan will not be in the grandview public realm zoning classification. it will be in AP.

the point of a traffic study is not to fight over whether it is alot or not, but to determine how additional loads will be handled based on requirements for parking spaces which will determine traffic.

as Luke has shared, the city doesn’t mandate how many spaces to build for a hotel, so they will have to guess - and this is where the community can weigh in without being contrarian - but constructive about what it would like.

as an example - ask any homeowner on hallock, cohasset, oneida, etc… if they would have preferred an agreement with the restaurants which would have insured their employees had to park in their lots as opposed to in front of their homes - or blocking emergency vehicle access to those streets every evening?

this is what community input is supposed to be about. constructive agreements for the community, the residents closest to the impact points, and more. these are not small matters and these should be handled with due care by constructive folks.

i couldn’t agree that the ranting idiots need not apply further to the reputation the community has gained here.

let’s allow us the opportunity to act as a mature community - working hand in hand with the developer to bring a real community asset for all.

the developer is open for this type of discourse and we should participate in a truly appropriate manner….for once.

let this be a new start to conversation with the developers.

let this developer be the signal of what is acceptable for the community.

developers who LISTEN and RESPOND to what they have heard.
