The gate at St. Justin’s Plaza

St. Justin's PlazaWe received an e-mail from a Mt. Washington resident living near St. Justin’s Plaza on Boggs Avenue who is bothered by the noise emanating from the gate leading into the parking lot.

“The back gate at St. Justine Plaza emits a loud beeping sound for 30 seconds every time it is opened or closed. It is accessed over 70 times a day and is a major disturbance to all those that live on that area of the street. The gate is over 25 years old…I believe the noise is there for a safety concern, but in this day in age, technology has advanced to the point where we could install sensors to eliminate this noise pollution issue.”

I did a little bit of research and found the City of Pittsburgh noise ordinance. In it, exemptions to the ordinance include (1) If the noise is being generated to request assistance or warn of a hazardous situation; or (2) if the noise emanates from a bell, chime or similar device used by a church, mosque, synagogue or school. It doesn’t seem like you have much in the way of legal recourse, but I would call 311 to find out for sure.

You may also want to contact the manager of St. Justin’s Plaza; Guy Berube 412-381-3941 or guyberube@aol.com. If he can’t help you, he can at least direct you to someone who can.

If anyone else has any advice or has encountered a similar problem and found a solution, please let us know.

The gate problem at St.Justin’s was talked about at our last board meeting. The manager is trying to correct this at the earlyest time he can. This was never a problem before.

St. Justin’s is going to help to try and correct any noise. We hope this will take care of this problem.

Thanks Gloria. I figured someone in the neighborhood would have some information they could share.
