For now it’s just Oakland, but Mayor Ravenstahl may be sweeping through a neighborhood near us soon.

It only takes a few minutes to call and report issues. I have been doing this for over a decade — this is how I was able to have three vacant properties razed, numerous owners fined and cleaned up some streets. I wasn’t just the anonymous caller – I walked the streets, took inventory, worked with the BBI inspector face-to-face, and followed through by appearing in housing court. Needless to say I wasn’t popular with the offenders.

I regret not being as vigilant and in the trenches – as what I am know for doing – however I am still calling when I see violations. My work consumes my time – and as soon as I figure out a workable schedule I will be pounding the pavement again. I am not pleased with the lack of BBI presence – I guess I have to light a fire!

I agree …100% with the calling the BBI …

I was thinking … is there a list (or could we draft one) that gives some examples of things that are violations?

I mean, I know generally speaking it’s obvious, but I’m not sure the BBI wants a report that says “this place just looks bad.” However if we could arm ourselves and the readers here with a list a few simple things we could be more powerful.

    Like:

    Grass higher than your knee…
    Garbage in the front yard
    Broken down cars on property
    ETC…

Melissa - do you have a list like that ?? or could you draft one?

Livin on Da Mount, The CDC has forms in the office you fill out and they go to the BBI.. They also have silent complaint forms for the police and even nunance bar forms. You do not have to sign your name to any of these papers. There is a wealth of information at the CDC Office, just stop in you’ll see! In fact there is a monthly meeting tonight at the Senior Center, 7pm All these questions and more can be answered.

It would be nice if there was an electronic version of these forms that we could link to. I’ll look into it.

Also, keep an eye on the site for a new feature that will help us track graffiti and non emergency crime!
