Pittsburgh Bureau of Building Inspection

Thought we’d save you a trip downtown with a high-level view of the Bureau of Building Inspection (BBI) Code Enforcement Division’s capabilities (lifted from the city’s website). You’ll note that the categories are very general (such as “building violations”, which could mean just about anything) so here are links to the actual codes and ordinances. I can’t make heads or tails of them, but if you have specific questions feel free to post a comment on the site and maybe someone out there on the Internets will be able to help us out.
What types of violations can you report to the BBI Code Enforcement Division? Here is a list of the most common violations received by Code Enforcement Officers:
- Rodent Harborage
All structures and exterior property shall be kept free from rodent infestation. If rodents are found, the owner shall promptly exterminate them.- Swimming Pools
Private swimming pools, hot tubs, and spas containing water more than 24 inches in depth shall be completely surrounded by a fence or barrier at least 48 inches in height above the finished ground level. Gates and doors in such barriers shall be self-closing and self-latching. Construction of a new swimming pool requires an occupancy permit and a building permit.- Abandoned Vehicles
No inoperative or unlicensed motor vehicle shall be parked, kept, or stored on any premises. BBI handles vehicle complaints on private property only. For abandoned vehicles in the public right of way, contact Public Works at (412) 255-2790.- Weeds
All buildings and exterior property shall be maintained free from weeds or plant growth in excess of 10 inches. Failure to comply with the notice of violation that is sent may result in legal action and/or the City removing the weeds at the owner’s expense.- Graffiti
No person shall willfully damage, mutilate, or deface any exterior surface of any structure on any private or public property by placing thereon marking, carving, or graffiti. What types of problems are not handled by BBI?
- Abandoned Vehicles (public right of way)
Mayor’s Office at 412-255-2621- Animal Control
Public Works at 412-255-2036- Sewer or Catch Basins
PWSA at 412-255-2429- Special Events Permit

The BBI site is also useful for finding information on building permits and business licenses.

This is a great resource to start — I will give a more detailed list of things to look for when taking a BBI inventory. Apologies that I can have it by the end of today.

Hi Mark,
This isn’t the venue to make political decisions this is an open dialogue to foster ideas that would improve the quality of life in our neighborhood! However, I am tempted to answer and I can only tell you that my committee is deliberating!

Francis Hurite who owns The Edge is to appear in court Thursday July 24 (tomorrow) in violation of code 115.1 unsafe structure. The housing court case will be heard in District Magisterial Judge Charles McLaughlin’s courtroom at 1pm. Brookline Blvd. Its just too bad the community was not notified. I had to read it in the South Hills Reporter!
