New Garden at the Corner of Grandview and Shiloh

by Mountain Girl ~ May 26th, 2008. Filed under: Community, Volunteer.

grandview and shiloh It seems a little corner of our neighborhood got some TLC this weekend. As all of us were eating our hotdogs and hamburgers and watching the Pens play, the Conoway family of Mt. Washington was busy tilling and planting. They cleaned out all of the wilting plants and weeds at the corner of Grandview and Shiloh and planted some lovely new flowers.

As residents and business owners, the Conoways took their own time and money and invested it in our community. If you run into them, thank them. And let their actions be an inspiration to us all.

    Thanks MG.

I had the help of my partner, Shelley Reed (Cityzens, LLC.), her husband, and children, Matt (14), Marc (12) and McKenzie (9).

My husband Mike, 4 year old Turner, and 9 month old (to cheer us on)!

It was our pleasure. We really had a nice time and thanks so much for the recognition!

what business do the Conoways own>?

Cityzens LLC. I’m sure Keri would be glad to talk more about the company and the work they’re doing in our community.

In fact, Keri, care to write a post about Cityzens? If so, feel free to email it to us at 15211org@gmail.com. Or you can send some details and we can write it up. I just think people would be interested. Thanks.

This was a HUGE boost to our mainstreet! I’ve heard a number of positive comments. This is exactly the type of effort that brings results and and can have a meaningful impact by inspiring us all to lend our talents, expertise and resources to enhance our community. Thanks to all involved!

That little park does not serve much of a purpose. A much better idea would be to sell that property to a person who would build a beautiful building where people could shop, work or live. We would have more tax dollars, no one would need to Take Care of the Park. And those that want a park can walk one block to the park on Shiloh and Virginia or walk to the park at McArdle and Grandview. I would much rather see the tax dollars pay for a police patrol in the business district, or speed limit signs, more pedestrian crossing signs, something progressive.

    San,

No tax dollars were used for this park donation. But it would be great to have donations made to the CDC so something progressive can be done.

    San:

This isn’t a park. It’s a garden. And it’s not only the personal economic investment we should recognize and appreciate, but two families taking time out of their long weekend to plant the flowers and clean up the weeds.

The irony of your critique is that the people that planted this garden are developers who have plans to build the beautiful buildings that you speak of where we will all be able to shop, work, and live.

Let’s commend the people with the wherewithal to actually put ideas into action instead of waiting for the arduous committee decision-making process. While there is a certainly a time and place to involve community organizations, sometimes you just have to do something yourself in order to get it done in this century.

I disagree with you as well San, the garden serves as a segway between Grandview and Shiloh. Its purpose is to intrigue visitors who are enjoying the view to realize that there is more to the mount by enticing them into the business district.

The volunteers who made this project happen did a great job. Thank you on behalf of my family for getting down in the dirt (literally) and making change happen!

No where did I indicate that tax dollars were used for the Grandview Shiloh Garden….someone said it was NOT a park, it is Garden. Why does there need to be a segway between Grandview Ave and Shiloh?

Just wanted to let you know that not everyone is in favor with your Garden. There are people who enjoy wonderful architecture; perhaps this great location could house a place of business, a lovely restaurant, a new office building, or a breath-taking residence.

If the folks who took time to weed and plant flowers have some plans to build on Grandview Ave I would be favor of that. Grandview Ave is prime real estate in Pittsburgh and it seems there has not been much building on that street in a very long time.

There is a “Garden” at Grandview and McArdle…how much more prime real estate do you want to cover with flowers? Some people actually come to Mt Washington to see the amazing view of downtown; that would mean buildings. Most visitors complain about the trees on the hillside of Grandview Ave, they do not come up here to see the trees.

Buildings bring in tax dollars, new residents, new businesses and new ideas. Flowers are great, but we need more development on Grandview and a little less flowers.
