Mt. Washington doesn’t get blitzed
by Mountain Girl ~ February 12th, 2010. Filed under: City Council, Infrastructure.Impassable streets in 19 neighborhoods were attended to by the City yesterday. Here’s the list. I can’t hold the suspense any longer–Mt. Washington isn’t on it. No one has reported why these neighborhoods were chosen. I don’t think these decisions were politically motivated. At least I hope they weren’t. I had started to map each neighborhood back to its City Council representative, but I didn’t want to go there at this point.
Councilman Peduto talks about the new “results-based” snow removal system being examined for Pittsburgh over at his site. Also, I know some of you have used seeclickfix and may or may not have seen anything happen as a result, but How’s My Street is supposedly actually being used by the City to determine the severity of snow damage to city streets. It works like this: Make a report here and it’s automatically fed to twitter under @howsmystreet. At most, a street will be plowed and at the very least, you’ll inform a neighbor about roads that are more passable than others. So let’s try it and see if we can’t get blitzed (our neighborhood I mean).

The past 2 days I saw a lot more activity with plows and front end loaders on the Mount. It may not have been name in the “blitz’ but it seemed like there was a more focues effort.

Why don’t one of the local colleges or universities conduct a contest to see who can design a new “snow plow” that does not dump more snow to the sides (where people have already shoveled). Seems a new design would be more than welcomed. While they are at it, maybe one with smaller dimensions too.

My sister lives in Annapolis Md, and each high student must complete 15 hours of Community Service in order to graduate from high school. Would that be a good idea for the City Schools? Perhaps there would be more clean sidewalks and a lot less graffiti?

Great idea landlord! I never quite understood why the schools in 15211 and 15210 did not have some program for having the students learn about being a good neighor and taking pride in where they live and attend school. I notice some of the other neighborhood schools get involved in clean up and planting flowers. Its a shame we sometimes have volunteers from outside the community planting flowers in the Grandview Garden. The entrance on Shiloh is such a small area, maybe the businesses could buy flowers and have school children plant them. Isn’t it wonderful to think about planting flowers. Spring is March 20!

Its because there more intrested in the kids getting an education and them getting paid then the kids cleaning communintys. i think its a good idea but they wont enforce it because they dont care

There was a mini-blitz on Kathleen Street Friday night! My friend and I were walking home around 10 p.m. and we encountered two front-loaders moving lots of snow around. Don’t know if they hit any other streets. And . . . how are we supposed to put our garbage out this week with all the snow mountains everywhere? Guess I’ll perch my bags atop one of the mountains.
