REMEMBERING OUT LOUD—TOGETHER

Join the first in a series of community gatherings aimed at gathering
stories and remembered history of life on Mt. Washington as part of our
Byways Signage project. And bring family and friends!!

The Mt. Washington Community Development Corporation (MWCDC) received
funding as part of the Pennsylvania Scenic Byways Program to develop
and install approximately 10 informational signs along Grandview Avenue
about the history and community of Mt. Washington. Our objective is to
inform the community and visitors alike about the rich stories and
historical significance of the Mt. Washington and Duquesne Heights area
to the greater Pittsburgh region. I am writing to invite you to
participate in our community research process.

Several gatherings have been scheduled for the last two weeks of
August which I hope you will attend. At each, we will participate in a
mix of specific discussion about the topic and take the opportunity to
more generally tell stories and share memories of life on Mt.
Washington over the years. We will discuss “facts,” stories about life
on Mt. Washington, and the relationship of this Mountaintop community
to the rest of Pittsbrugh and the region. Any memories and
insights–yours or those of your elders–that you think are important
to understanding this community over time will be most welcome.

The following meetings are scheduled–and open to the public:

Saturday, August 9 from 9:30 - noon, at Chatham Hall in Chatham Village to discuss Chatham Village

Tuesday, August 12 from 6 - 8pm, at Chatham Hall in Chatham Village to discuss the Inclines (all of them!)

Wednesday, August 13 from 6 - 8pm, at Chatham Hall in Chatham Village to discuss owning businesses over the years

Tuesday, August 26 from 7:30 - 9pm at the MWCDC office on Shiloh Street to discuss the role of the Parks and greenspace

Participants are encouraged to bring COPIES of photographs and
documents that help illustrate the history of the area or your family's
story in the area. I will audio tape our conversations to facilitate my
accurately remembering what was said without having to be preoccupied
with notetaking.

Above all, please think of these gatherings as an opportunity to
build community through shared memories and stories. I envision
laughter, perhaps a few tears, and a very good time for all present!!

If you are able to attend any of the meetings or have any questions
at all, please let me know by calling the MWCDC office at 412-481-3220
(ask for Lisa J.) or via email at ljohnson@mwcdc.org.

I hope to see you there!
