I understand the fundraiser for the MWCDC was a wonderful success. Who from the Business community attended the event? Unfortunately there seems to be some sort of disconnect with the business community and the MWCDC. You would think they would support the neighborhood they have their businesses. After all the majority of them make their money from people that live in 15211. From what I've been told there are a number of owners that did not contribute one penny to the fundraiser. Some businesses did step up without any question and not only donated but attended the fundraiser as well, others just did nothing. They should be ashamed of themselves.

I agree! In a slightly related topic, any chance of getting some of these yucky businesses out of here and replaced with vibrant businesses that don't gouge their customers or allow their premises to become desirable hangouts for folks with shady motives?
I refer to Foodland (please god let Giant Eagle Express take over) and the Cogos at Virginia & Woodruff….

If we would all start complaining to the owner of Foodland, their new, so a little more willing to please. Maybe they would listen. Cogo is a differant story. I don't understand how Cogo's still is in business, they are almost twice as much as everywhere else. I guess its just the convenience, I'm amazed at the people I see go in there that can't afford the higher prices.

I am new to this forum. I am surpised to hear that Foodland is being called a shady business. There will be some riff raff anywhere. This is a place that has invested in the local economy for a long time, employs many from 15211, and is in defiance of the cookie cutter, strip mall grocery store. Giant Eagle is fine, but isn't it nice to have one hometown store, instead of just another chain/franchise? I know Foodland is a franchise too, but it is defintely more of a hometown kind of place. Heck, half the employees have worked there for over 10 years now!

It's just that the Foodland franchise is independently-owned — so, as the only grocer on The Mount — he can charge whatever he likes and make a fortune. When my sons were babies, I found the prices high. Now they're adults and the prices are astronomical. Single Moms shouldn't have to pay $4.70 or more for a box of cereal. I don't know if Giant Eagle prices would be any lower, given that is the only supermarket around. Back when the Foodland was a Kroger and there was a Shop and Save at the bottom of Sweetbriar, prices were a little more reasonable because of the competition. I think high prices are people's main complaint with Foodland.

Yeah, I agree, prices are a bit high at Foodland. I guess I am ok paying a bit higher prices (for the most part) and supporting the local economy than going to another neighborhood, that's all. I hope that we as 15211 residents will shop locally when possible instead of going to the big chains. I like Target and Costco as much as the next person, but I've found that many items, and especially dining, can be had here for around the smae prices, plus you don't have to use gas money to drive to Robinson or North Hills.

Prices are high everywhere nowadays. So naturally the prices would be cheaper when your now-adult children were babies.

I really like to shop the food section of Rite Aid, they have wonderful specials on their food. And it is just a walk down the hill for me to go there. I enjoy the convenience of Foodland, and since the employees have taken ownership the store looks cleaner and brighter and the new shopping carts are great. And I do shop at the CoGo's on Bailey; great place to pick up the Sunday paper on Saturday night.
I like to eat at several of the local shops on Shiloh, including Subway, Red Beards and the Hot Dog Shop, there is a very good breakfast at the corner cafe at Virginia and Shiloh (sorry, I do not know the name of that coffee shop). And the Dollar Store is a lot of fun.
Yes, I try to buy as much as possible within walking distance of my house. The stores need our support in order to grow their businesses, and I am very happy to help. If I pay a little more locally, it's of. The time and energy it takes to go to the Mall makes their bargain, not so great.
Please do not be too harsh on the store owners that did not support the CDC Fundraiser; perhaps they support other community projects. Owning a business does not mean that you can support each request that comes your way.
I would say Shop in the neighborhood whenever possible.

Agreed, shop local: it may take a while to see the benefits but in time they will be seen.
But I also think that the MWCDC is a bunch of marketing, and not too much else. Yes they've done great things, but they've also let some really important First Step issues behind!
For one, the garbage! Come on, I know you all see it, I know you all help. But we have to push a little harder. I've planned two clean-ups for the area and a total of 10 residents have atteneded (including myself and my boyfriend). I like to be modest and not pushy and give people time on this situation. But come on, LETS DO THIS! It is a bit overwhelming because some of the work may require some excavating (the hillsides off of Sycamore and William). But it can be done, it's being done elsewhere. There's so much to offer here, and yeah the view too.
If anyone is interested in really helping to push this issue I'd like to be a part of active and concerned citizens rather than just the latter.
And, as I was e-mailing around to notify local officials and concerned parties about my most recent event (which hosted 45 Pitt Students for Pitt Make a Difference Day 11 exchange students from the Wilkins School Community Center and about 9 others) I recieved no reply. It's not about the reply, but if the name fits, then help develop your community! So I took in stride the 150 bags of garbage, 8 tires, baby washing seat, wine rack, valid bank card, etc: and was nearly moved to tears when a older neighbor came outside patted my boyfriend on the back and came up to give me his Good Day card : which began with 'if your day is looking bad, see what good you can do'. He just simply stated he wanted us to have it because we deserved it.
Whew, thanks for reading that if you made it all the way through! LETS DO THIS!!!!!!
