Has anyone noticed the growing number of homeless making their way from Shiloh (Wine and Spirits with 40's in hand) to Grandview Park?

One looked quite sad the Charles Lewis Park was being worked on so he sat on the fire house wall…

Anyway - one nice thing I did see was the trees on Bailey. They look great so far.

I'm part of the Friends of Grandview Park and we also have a very active blockwatch on Bailey ave. That is the first time I've heard this. What time did you see this happening? How do you know their homeless?I'm asking all this because we have a very active block watch on Bailey Ave. and I will alert everyone on the list that lives near there. Just so you know there is a pay phone right at the entrance to the park and you do not need any money to call 911. Thanks for the info.

Hi Diane,

I wanted to ask for your contact information as I know that you are very active on that block and Bigbee. I wasn't trying to follow him down the block. He was definitely homeless which is honestly sad but I had my 8 month old with me and had to stop several times and ended up behind him all the way down at Grandview Park where I made my turn onto Kathleen.

It was around noon…

The other gentlemen with the 40 in hand pretty much never left the fire station area even when I returned from Grandview Park…

ctrn: I feel bad for the homeless but we do not want them in the park. That element would chase away all the good people that would want to use the park. We as a group, have worked real hard for many years to improve the park and the trails, including Bigbee Field, in fact we are looking for new people to join the Friends of Grandview Park. Next year will be its 100th birthday and we need help in planning. Interested?

I completely understand. I myself feel for the homeless but I don't want people afraid to use the park. I was afraid as a child to go down there and in fact we weren't allowed to.

Grandview Park looks fantastic now.

I would definitely be interested in Friends of Grandview Park.

Daine,

There must be a conspiracy! I swear every major volunteer day is when I am scheduled to be away. Let me know how else I can help during the summer…

Bummed out.

Speaking of Grandview Park, I don't even know where it's at, what there is to do there, or really anything about it at all.

Can anyone sell me on it? The only park I use up here is Olympia, and that's only to play basketball.

While driving down Sycamore on the bridge area, if you look up to the right where the bridge part of PJ McArdle begins from the Liberty Bridge, there's actually an entire homeless community living there. You can see clothes hanging from the trees along with a couple of blankets tied together for shelter. There's definitely always been a homeless community up here, but it seems that they're spreading into Grandview Park now. Feel free to stop and see it for yourself.

Esus, lots of people that live on the mount are aware of the homeless community. I'm wondering how many people have actually called the police or contacted the councilman. That is how you get some action. You know, the squeeky wheel again! There is an open space meeting on Wednesday June 11 at 5:00 in the MWCDC office, maybe it should be on the agenda.

CAN anyone tell me who the strung out tall guy that loiters on Shiloh is? Is he a resident or homeless? NOT too good for the business district to see a man dancing and talking to himself…

Also, there is another white bearded man that carries his belonging with him… actually saw him climbing out of the paper drive as St. Mary's. We alerted the school.

One more - the elderly lady with the glasses that claims she lives at 1000 Grandview. She actually told me that when she was walking down my street…

CTRN: A lot of us have already talked to police about them. Unless they are hurting themselves or others there is nothing that can be done. You know their rights and all that…..

CTRN, The one you speak of with the glasses does in fact live at 1000 Grandview. She has a long history in Mt. Washington. I'm sure if you ask some people around town they will tell you more. I don't want to spread rumors on here so….

I am still new to this board, and just came across this thread. Who knows if those who have been posting in the past will even read this, but I felt compelled….

Hold on here people!!!!! How about a little compassion?! Has anyone tried to talk to these scary, ugly, disgusting, leprous, hideous….HOMELESS PEOPLE, AHHHH!!!!

I mean, the way you all make it sound, these people are monsters who should be sucked up by the ghostbusters, shoved into a pit where they will never again been seen or heard again! Has anyone tried engaging them in meaningful comversation? Or maybe offering to buy them something to eat? My goodness! I am no angel, and I don't pretend to be perfect. But seriously. I realize they may not smell great or look as dashing as “the normal people” do, but surely we can come up with better solutions than calling the police and trying to rid our community of those less fortunate than us.

Mt Washington CleanUp August 24th, the first of a few Thank Yous can from a homeless man named John. He can often be seen carrying suitcases up Sycamore Hill. I've watched him from my window on several occassions, wondering what happened. He stopped and thanked us for what we do! And went on to tell us that we are children of god (i'm not the most religious person, but to find faith in dark holes of his eyes was something I couldn't resist)

Most homeless people once lived a normal life. And something or another happened and they lost their jobs, homes, family etc. and now reside on our streets. He Thanked us for cleaning his home. The streets are his floors, the overpasses his securities. Relax, touch base. Unfortunately this is a part of city life, and more and more 'every day residences' are finding themselves without a place to go!

PS - even the people you may THINK are well off….may be homeless too. The homeless have very creative ways of making their way through daily life!

Best To You….and Wishes that we All keep our homes this winter!

We have empty, abandoned houses and homeless people! Too bad there can't be some connection made between the two.

Sorry but I'm more worried about families with homes that cannot afford heat and food in this terrible economy. Stacey, since a few of us are adopting mailboxes why not a homeless person?

What is this all about adopting mailboxes?

Stacey-

Check out the message boards about adopting a mailbox. We want to rid Mt. Washington of graffitti covered collection boxes and with the help of residents adopting a collection box near them, we can clean up the boxes all over our neighborhood.
