I do not remember where or when I heard this, but I heard that a gym was opening on Shiloh where that Rite-Aid or Eckerd was. Has anyone else heard about this? Is this actually happening or was it just a rumor? Hopefully, this is actually happening because I would love to be able to work out at a gym that close to home.

I also heard the same thing. I am guessing it is only a rumour since the building still has a for sale sign on it. I agree that it would be a good idea.

It wasn't a rumor, there were 2 different gyms interested in that property. Unfortunatly both deals fell through. Stay tuned though. There are some great things about to happen to that space.

Anything new on the gym? Also . . what's the latest with the senior citizen housing planned for the old South Hills High School?
I walk by there frequently, and weeds are sprouting up. Even the locks and chains on the fence are rusty. Any update? Thanks.

South Hills High School (SHHS) - - I can tell you that the SHHS project is moving forward. The CDC board voted unanimously this month to approve a contract between the CDC and the developer for the SHHS. Essentially, the developer needs the CDC to help with fundraising efforts and act as the qualified non-profit recipient of the funds for this project. Two big beneifts, the CDC is involved on a very detailed level with this development AND the CDC is paid a fee for their part in the fund raiser.

Did someone say they saw a FOR SALE sign at the former Eckerd location on Shiloh Street. I thought it was a FOR RENT sign. Hopefully it is for Sale..that would be nice.
Can someone get the owners of the Post Office Building to install new sidewalks? Those crumbly walks look terrible and they are a tripping hazard. The CDC is always trying to bring visitors in from the View…well, when they see the ugly sidewalk, who would want to go any further.
The walks in front of Red Beards are very nice, and there is someone out there almost every day powewashing the sidewalks or sweeping them. That owner really takes great pride in the appearance of his/her business location.

Actually, I walked past the former Eckerd last night and the sign (which has fallen out of the window) says For Lease.
As far as SHHS, I am not a community developer or organizer, so I didn't really understand your response, JT.
I just wondered –
Is it still going to be housing for senior citizens?
Any idea at all when work might begin? 2009? Later?
That's all I was wondering . . . . .
Thanks.

Hi All,
SHHS is moving forward — the developer received crucial tax credits which was imperative to the development. And to answer the question – yes it is going to be part senior housing and part market rate housing. There will be a wellness center and other things that will benefit not only those who will live in the building but the community as a whole. As an individual who has been involved with this project since its inception some 13-years – I can tell you that the neighborhood will see an economic boost as well as long awaited stabilization. Yes, some credit is due to the CDC but the true champions for this project is Mrs. Roberta Jones and Mrs. Ginny Gates they have spent countless hours and “years” championing this project when it was not a popular idea. Remember all of us who live behind Grandview are orphans – so we finally have something sustainable for our part of the world!
