Does anyone know how we can get some concert series at Grandview Park like they have all around Allegheny County?

I love the idea of an ice-cream social with a concert….

If anyone knows of a group willing to play for free at Grandview Park let me know. Unfortunatly, the Friends of Grandview Park are just a grass roots organization and we have no funding. We would love to have some sponsers to help pay for a good musical group. Free movies will begin in June every Sat at 9pm thru August. Compliments of CitiParks and Comcast.

Diane,

I moved here 2 years ago from Toledo, Ohio, and one thing I noticed is the lack of a music scene here. Don't get me wrong, there is a scene, but there's no organization. In Toledo, one of the largest events each year was the Toledo Music Festival. It hosted all kinds of bands of different genres of music, and it allowed all sorts of bands to “hook up” and work together towards getting themselves more exposure. I was actually in the early stages of planning a so called “Pittsburgh Music Festival” with a large number of groups of all kinds of music as an all day event. I was originally planning on having this around September (after kids are back in school and can promote, but still having nice weather). If done on a large enough scale, some “larger drawing acts” would bite, even with it being a “non-paying show” due to the exposure. I was still in the process of looking for a venue, but I needed something with large enough capacity as well as a central location (ie. not Charleroi or Burgettstown).

I do currently play in a band, and in our practice space, there are approximately 30 other bands, who all have networking connections with dozens of other acts.

Just an idea…

Alex, Sounds wonderful to me. We have been looking for someone like you, to take charge and go with it. All thats needed is a date, Sat afternoon before the movies seem to work out the best. or in the fall like you said. Then you would need to get a permit through the city. Then advertise and promote it. We've had a day of music, with many bands, a few years ago, it worked out well. But they all played for free, they were all local. Many Many years ago it was a weekly event in the summer, but as I mentioned before, it takes sponsers, and that important word. VOLUNTEERS!

Alex,

You have our full support. We have friends in some bands too that are always looking for places to play. Just let us know what you need on the promotions end. I think it's a fabulous idea.

Is there anyway you could get a little bit of money to this through the CDC? Maybe if you'd have it on Shiloh (i.e., in the business district). We've been suggesting closing Shiloh St down and having a festival there for years, but no one else seems interested. It would require a permit, but I don't see why you couldn't get one. They do it other places in the city. Or do you think it would be better in the park because of the stage and the city view as a backdrop??

Hi Alex,

Have you had time to stop by the park yet? It is a hidden gem up here. Can't understand why anyone wouldn't want to have a gig up there…

Hopefully you'll be the 1st!

I still haven't been to the park. Is there a stage there by chance? Or electricity to power equipment on said stage?

Alex, Yes there is a stage and yes there is electricity. In fact that is where Citiparks sets up the big screen for the Movies in the Park every Summer….

Hey Alex,

Maybe you and I can work on researching this together… take a walk up to Grandview Park…

It's right at the corner of Bailey and Beltzoover - perfect place for a concert series!!

I wonder if it is free do we need to obtain a permit…

When You Need An Amusement Places and Producers License:

Anyone who conducts a place of amusement or is a producer of amusements must obtain a license from the License Officer. A place of amusement means any place, indoors or outdoors, within the City, where the general public or a limited number of persons may, upon payment of an established price, attend or engage in any amusement

CTRN, You need a permit. MWCDC and or Allentown CDC can help with that.

Oh happy joy I don't know much about obtaining permits or any of that jazz. And CTRN, I'd be more than willing and happy to research this with someone. I know how to make a show work, I'm just not on the “in” on the legalities and what not.

Alex-Ken Wolfe, who is on the Allentown CDC Board and also Chief of Staff for Councilman Bruce Kraus (his district is where Grandview Park is located) will try to help with the permit questions etc. He has also planned musical events in the past at Grandview Park .412-255-2130

Alex, let us know if we can do anything to help. Are you thinking just live music in Grandview Park, or an entire event? With local vendors selling their art and food, etc? Maybe local businesses could donate in exchange for free advertising.

I'm hoping more for an “event” of sorts. I was also thinking about the possibility of contacting local radio stations to see about them putting on their own “stage” for certain acts. I'd love to have some sort of sit down with someone who might know more information on obtaining grants, and to exchange promotional ideas and what sorts of things would go on with these events, how to contact certain vendors, etc…

Hi Alex,

Email me at CTRN@gmail.com. Also - maybe we can work on an event for the 100th birthday party for Grandview Park next year.

Just spoke to Luke Stanford with the Mon River Ramblers. He would be interested in a musical event in Grandview Park. 412-526-1238
