A robbery occured near Southern Ave. and Natchez St. at 2:30 pm today (8-17-08). Robber was a young black male (around 25 yrs. old) wearing a black “fishing hat” (wide brim around the whole hat). The man grabbed a purse from a woman carrying it and ran away. A police report has been made. Any information would be appreciated 412-608-9236

I saw the same guy on Boggs Ave the same day walking up and down the street( I noticed since I work on Boggs) and there was a parked car across the street from me which he kept looking in and he came back later and pulled on the handles on the car but they were locked. I noticed later that the owner of the car left a purse on the back seat. I kept a look out for the owner of the car to come back and let them know but the car was still parked when I left work and was gone the following morning.

Did you call someone?

Yes, you should have called the police to let them know that you saw a man trying to get into a parked car. And perhaps the police being there would have caught the attention of the car owner. Also the police being there would let the 'would-be-theft” that this was not a good area to try to rob cars.

Let's all try to watch out for each other and do not hesitate to call the police when you see something that isn't just right. The more often the police are here, the better.

I did call the police and asked that they ride by and keep an eye on him, however, as I knew with past experiences, by the time the police go by the person you call the police on is gone.

Next time if you have your cell phone with you, take his picture. Or pretend to, it sure scares them off! I did that recently with some kids. Unfortunately they all had hoods and covered their heads real quick.

Can anyone provide a better description (i.e., facial features, height etc. etc.)

I've noticed a sketchy person around the neighborhood, and perhaps I'm just paranoid, but part of me wouldn't doubt if it was him. Then again, I don't want to jump to any unnecessary conclusions.

The fisherman hat is what makes me think it is the same guy I saw. He was a young dark skin black male(about 20-23 years old). Average height, around 5'7-5'10.

I had a picture anonymously dropped off that is supposably him. I also have a name (I don't want to post it here since it is just hear say). I have updated the police with this information. If anyone would like to see the picture I have (it is poor quality) please stop by my shop: JVRaschi's Treasures, 28 Southern Ave. I think we as a community need to do as much as we can to eliminate/reduce this increasing crime.

Some other info I forgot to post is that when we gave the police the name I had been given, the officer knew the name and described the hat before we mentioned it to him. He had been looking for this criminal to serve a warrant. So, there are people looking for him and he seems to be known by the police. Let's hope they get him

There have been some strange people walking our streets lately. Let's everyone keep an eye on them. And do call the police. Even if the people are gone, just seeing the police on the streets is a good thing.

Wonder if we should get together and 'hire” our own police man. You need to do in blocks of 4 hours. It used to be about $40.00 per hour. This is a City Police Office in uniform and with a gun and a radio. He can do a foot patrol, check on houses and stores…what ever we wanted.

I hired a police office about 10 years ago when there was a gang stealing cars on Boggs, Wyoming, & Southern Ave. I had him for about two months. They did not steal any cars on my street during those two months.

Just a thought.

Ok so it's not the same guy and maybe I am just paranoid.

I remember just last year noticing a police car driving down the street, at least twice, every night. With their spotlight on checking alley ways and such. I haven't seen that, not even once, this whole entire year. We really do need a stronger police force on the Mount.

The guy with the beard, does he always have on a sweatshirt jacket with the hood up?

Nope, no hood. But ALWAYS a black shirt, and he is very dark, and always acting shady…so you can see why I was confused.

maybe the police should focus more on stopping these bullshit robberies rather than setting up speed traps by saint mary's school and giving soccer moms in minivans tickets for speeding in a school zone (i have driven past there three days this week around 11am and have seen multiple motorcycle police sitting on bigham and pulling people over on grandview each time)

That's a good point but don't forget that stopping these robberies would require the officers to actually do some leg work and to have some guts. You know how easy it is to sit in a car, laying back with a hoagie in your hands and just wait for an unsuspecting soccer mom to fly by doing 32 in a 25 mph zone? That's hard work… and what you're asking for is an act from god.
