Last night (technically this morning) at 12:15 I witnessed a phone smashing. Two guys rolled up to the stoplight on Ulysses Street in a red chevy S-10 or GMC sonoma pickup, with gray underbody. A guy got out of the passenger seat, probably around 20 or so years old and walked up to the phone, and forcefully pulled it or slammed it. About Ten minutes later I walked down the street and saw a nearby police officer pulling into st. mary of the mount parking lot. I thought he was there because he got a call, but it was just coincidence and he knew nothing about the incident. I did not get a liscense plate number but I told the police officer about everything I witnessed, he wasn't too friendly and asked me why I didn't call them 10 minutes ago and I told him I was sorry that I even told him everything if trying to be a good citizen means that I was going to get that kind of attitude from a law enforcement officer. Anyways I figured he was just irritated about what happened and figured from the time elapsed there was less of a chance of catching these people.

Thanks for this information. I agree the police officer was probably just frustrated. We have to be vigilant about calling 911 when we see something that needs immediate attention and call 311 at other times. I wrote a post about this last week about the differences in the two.

That is a weird thing to want to do. Why smash a phone?

I don't know why somebody would smash a phone, it takes a complete loser to make that decision, not to mention the amount of trouble you could get in for doing something like that. I debated calling 911 and I should have, but speaking to the officer he clarified that I should have called 911, I was debating it because it wasn't a robbery or a murder or anything to seem severe enough to call 911. Of course if I witness something again, I'll be sure to call 911. The officer told me that 311 was for complaints and things like that. Hopefully they realize what they did and maybe they have even been approached by a law enforcement officer by now, but I can't understand some peoples total disregard for public/private property.

Itszando,

PLEASE don't ever hesitate to contact the police! If we don't report incidents (regardless of how small) the police will think that everything is fine in our community and most likely focus their efforts elsewhere. If we want to better our community we have to report everything! Even small items such as graffiti, littering and stealing items from front porches. This does not take time away from officers dealing with larger issues. Calls are prioritized by the department. The incident is registered. That's the important thing….. this will help give us all a more realistic understanding of the crime that is happening in our neighborhood.

Thank you for talking with the police officer. I realize that isn't always easy.

And why smash a pay phone? Why vandalize or steal or worse? I'll never understand and quite frankly, hope that I never do.

It seems as if this isn't the first time this phone has been smashed. I noticed it was smashed a couple months ago then it was fixed and now smashed again just like the other one near the flag pole on Grandview.

Maybe you could 311 asking for more patrolling in the neighborhood. We did on Olympia Street last year because of the basketball games. I'm sure we will do it again and we had more police patrolling the street the very next day.

Man I really wish we had cops walking the beat again.

What do you mean you asked for patrolling because of the basketball games? Basketball seems like a pretty innocent act to me, keeps people out of trouble.

Basketball games are pretty innocent. Sometimes the crowds aren't.
