We received this email today from someone living on Woodruff Street.

It's 9/30/2008. At 3:00 PM. As I'm keying this, my neighbor is laying in the middle of Woodruff Street - after being mugged — in broad daylight. Three black youths were seen doing it, and then running up Grace Street, then Lowen Street, towards Dilworth Park. We heard on the police radio, on the belt of a policeman standing at the scene, that another patrol car had captured “three actors” on Wilbur Street. The police, along with the witness, went off in their patrol car to identify the “actors”.

God I hope they got them. This is just too much! Something needs to happen to stop this crime. This makes about 6 muggings/robberies that I have heard of in the last week and a half. All happening in broad day light. What are we supposed to do, we can't all just hide inside all day. The police must give us more patrols. The criminals seem to know that the police do not patrol our streets regularly. If this continues it will kill Mt. Washington. If the police don't get this under control then the good people will move out leaving more room for the bad ones. If the bad guys see regular police presence, they won't stick around. What is the next step?

I don't mean to oversimplify this issue, but check out this article: http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/la-oe-rosenfeld20mar20,0,56503.story

It makes the case that as the economy tanks, crime becomes a more appealing alternative to poverty. As for how we as a community combat this, I don't know. Guardian Angels? http://www.guardianangels.org/about.html

I'm not hiding from anyone. In fact, I stand up and open my mouth and show I have no fear. Holy Lord people! Come on - take a stand.

MG,

It looks like one is in development here. Frank Lee is the contact. I wonder which neighborhoods are being targeted.

We need to Shut Down the Ream Center ASAP! We didn't have these problems when it was closed. 15211 kids managed without it in the past, they can do it again. Besides, the city has financial problems and the money should be spent on hiring more police officers, not on swimming pools that attract little criminals.

These little punks need to stay in their own neighborhood. They will do nothing but ruin the quality of life and the property values of 15211. Shut it down now! Before it is too late.

Hi. My aunt was the victim of the mugging on Woodruff. I would like to update you all on her condition. She has four broken ribs (2 were broken in 2 different places), a broken pelvis and a collapsed lung. She is in terrible pain and can hardly move. She is looking at at least 8-10 weeks of recovery time. She is 66 years old and weighed approximately 80 pounds. She just lost her husband about three weeks ago. She was trying to get out of the house and do stuff to keep her busy, since she retired early about 6 years ago to take care of her husband. He was her life and she took care of him every day for the past 5-6 years.

She was returning from a walk as she had to run some errands. After grabbing a coffee and picking up groceries from Foodland she was two houses away when she was attacked.

This is just absolutely rediculous. I grew up on the South Side, but spent many, many summers and weekends at my Aunt and Uncles house on Mt. Washington. It's pretty scary that my poor aunt could not take a walk during daylight on a busy road. Luckily the three JUVENILES were caught. After talking to the detective on the case, I learned that there were many more incidents that these boys along with others were involved with and that there were still suspects out there that they had yet to get.

It's not just Mt. Washington, it is getting bad everywhere. I recently just moved from Beechview. I lived three houses away from the big heroin bust that made the news a few months back. I'd like to think I'm in a better neighborhood (out of the City) for my children to grow up in, but I realize that it is bad EVERYWHERE now. I'm scared for myself, my children and my family. It's always harder when it hits close to home.

I don't know if the people who were there that day will ever read this, but I would like to thank them for helping my aunt and helping to catch the people who did this to her. Also, thank you for calling me and at least I was able to be there for her. Although it was extremely difficult for me to see her like that, I am glad that I was able to be there for her.

I am extremely thankful and greatful for the wonderful neighbors who stood up for the victims and identified these boys and called 911 and got the help that my aunt needed. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH.

I'm very sorry to hear what happened to your Aunt and for her loss (as well as yours).

What a bunch of cowards. Attacking a defenseless 90 pound woman? I'd like to see them try that on a grown man. Apparently they have been targeting woman. It is absolutely unacceptable. These little punks need to be removed from the neighborhood.

I hope your Aunt is OK and they throw the book at these little $%#^&*@. Their parents should be punished too.

A lady from Shuman Center just called me… they have a preliminary hearing downtown on October 9th at 8:30. She said they will be held in Shuman until then, but is unsure what the judge will do with them until the actual hearing. My Aunt does not need to be at this hearing (which is good because she wont be able to make it with her current condition). I will also post when the actual hearing will be that my Aunt needs to be at because My family and some of the neighbors I talked to wants to be there. I think we all need to stand up and take action. That we will not tolerate these crimes.

They were originally being charged with robbery. However, after the detectives came to the Hospital to return my aunt's purse, we gave them copies of her hospital records and it is my understanding they will be charged with aggrivated assault too.

I can only hope and pray that the judge throws the book at these kids. Maybe if we can get some community support we can take a stand and make sure these kids cannot do this to somebody else and for those thinking of doing it to someone else we can stand up and let them know that we as a community will NOT TAKE THIS ANYMORE.

I took my children to see Aunt Audrey last night, as they too are close with her. My 5 year old and 8 year old were so confused and scared. They couldn't understand it and in all honestly I can't either. I can only hope that no other family has to go through this. It is absolutely horrible.

It's at the old jail house, 550 5th Avenue, 15219.

Hope that helps Smile

Please continue to post updates about your aunt. We will also remind people about the hearings a day or two before. ShutDownReam is right that if we show community outrage, we will hopefully get an increased police presence.

Our thoughts are with you and your family.

It was at the old jail house, 550 5th Avenue, 15219.

I have not heard back from the lady at Shuman regarding the hearing, but will post when I hear from her.

Also, my Aunt is in the ICU as she is not getting enough oxygen due to the broken ribs and collapsed lung. She also has a feeding tube through her nose.

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers.

I read this on the site today:

“We need to Shut Down the Ream Center ASAP! We didn't have these problems when it was closed. 15211 kids managed without it in the past, they can do it again. Besides, the city has financial problems and the money should be spent on hiring more police officers, not on swimming pools that attract little criminals.”

Whoaa!!! Wait a minute here! “Little criminals” Most of the kids who go to reams are good kids.

I am very sorry for what has been happening lately, but THE LAST THING WE NEED TO DO IS SHUT DOWN THE REC CENTER!!!!!

I grew up in Mt Washington, and am a homeowner here now. I would have loved to have something like the reams rec center around when I was 16.

Advocating for Reams to be shut down is a knee jerk reaction and would be the WORST THING to do. Kids need positive places to go, and reams is such a place. The people who run it are good people, who have a heart for kids and this community. It is not their fault that A FEW kids made a bad choice.

Should we also shut down the bars on Shiloh because a few take drinking too far? Should we also shut down Cogos because kids hang their? NO! We instead should support places like Reams and GET INVOLVED OURSELVES.

Again, I am very sorry for the recent victims. That could have very easily been my mother or wife, both of whom live and walk in Mt Washington daily. They would both agree that knee jerk reactions and removing one fo the few places kids ahve to hang out around here is not the answer.

Please everyone, lets not make impulsive decisions and spread this nonsense because of the actions of a few.

this is an incorrect observation. The Ream Recreation Center only allows those children and teenagers who live in 15211 to enter the building and participate in events. I feel terrible for the woman who was attacked, but what happened to her and the other incidents can not be blamed on the recreation center. As a senior counselor at the center, I know who comes in and who is made to stay out. Please take more careful observations that recently even through the summer months, more crime has arisen in Mount Washington. There are problems that need to be identified and resolved. Don't take away a solution by falsly accusing it as a problem.
