My friend came to redbeards for 2 hrs last night and in that 2 hrs his truck was broken into. They broke his window, stole his wallet, briefcase, cc, suit jacket and more. I can't believe there are no friggn cameras in that parking lot. I mean seriously 2 hrs he came up from North Hills to give our restuarants some business and this shit happens. I grew up here and now I know why everyone is leaving Mt. Washington, this place is just going to shit. It used to be such a nice area growing up here, not anymore. I can't wait to get the hell out of here myself. Last week my girlfriend got her jeep broken into at 4 in the friggn afternoon. What is going on. Someone needs to do something here and soon. What will it take to get some cameras in the lot or put some patrol cars on the streets. This place sucks anymore. I used to talk so great about it and used to brag about how nice it was growing up here. Not any more. Hopefully something will change with these emails but I will definately not be holding my breath. nobody cares any more and thats the problem.

That's a real shame that truck was broken into. Where was that beat cop?? I see him standing around on Shiloh talking to people and the other evening he was walking through that parking lot. Too bad they're not there when you need them . . .

It is good that you are writing about your friends truck being broken into, so that we can be more aware. My friends truck was broken into right in front of my house, 5:30PM on a Friday afternoon. I walked out of the house to run across the street, and within 15 minutes his truck window was smashed and his GPS was stolen.

Do we need more police officers or do we need to teach people to respect other people's property? I agree with you, it was never like this before. I used to leave my house unlocked and go to Foodland, but not now.

Hopefully the new development at the Edge will bring in some High End people and the Low End People will go away.

Just walking down the street, the language some of the people use is really disappointing. And do these people know how to 'talk' quietly???….all they do is scream at each other.

This is really a bad situtation. I moved here from the North Hills two years ago and really fell in love with the area. It's so convienent to everything and I am lucky enough to have a great home with a great view. My friends have been visiting and enjoying the bars and restaurants and bringing their money into the area, but I've had enough. I'm not naive enough to think that the suburbs are crime free, but the fact is that I never, ever had even one incident in the 15 years that I lived in the North Hills.

I'm not one to just “run away” but why should I subject myself and my family to the crime that's occuring?

The fact is that I don't have to and won't.

Dave: Please don't move back to the North Hills. I don't want to ruffle any feathers by saying these are isolated incidents . . . but I'm sure if you took a poll on the street you'd find many people who have lived up here 15 years or longer without being a crime victim. As far as these crime incidents, break-ins, etc. . . . .if you moved to Bloomfield . . . you'd encounter the same thing. Carrick. . . no better. It's really everywhere. But the city has so much to offer; we'd hate to lose you as a resident. I'm not discounting the two murders up here this summer or the fact that these incidents do occur from time to time. And I'm sorry for those victims. But don't you think it's better to all work together to try and solve the problem . . . instead of just packing our bags and running back to suburbia? I hope you stay.

To add insult to injury — Monday evening there was an armed robbery in the 400-500 block of Boggs Avenue. A guy was walking up from the junction when three black guys jumped out of the brush and put a gun to his head. They told him to give them his money — then they ruffed him up and patted him down and when they saw he didn't have anything — they told him to take his broke ass home. How nice!

I don't leave anything of value in sight inside my car. And I almost look forward to winter up here because when you walk outside nobody is yelling and swearing or roaming the middle of the streets. I almost feel safer then. I'm really suprised about the 400-500 block of Boggs Avenue thing though. A year or two ago I knew of someone whos Jeep was stolen from there - they never did find it. But blatent armed robbery?

ssb, I've got to say that I'm really torn… I do love it here and I know many of my neighbors have lived here for many, many years and never had a problem, but most of them are older and don't really hit the streets after 8 pm. I also understand that the two murders were isolated instances…I also understand that the crime incidents, break-ins and othertypes of issues happen in other areas of the city also.

Here's what it comes down to…I do love it here, but I also loved the North Hills. From there, I'm only about fifteen minutes from the city, and it's pretty easy to get here any time I want. The area is much safer and the taxes are much lower. I can't let my 15 year old daughter walk the streets here at night, but could there with no concern. I'm not scared, but am always wary when I walk down Bailey to Boggs after dark. I've had issues with crime here, although minor, but still…why should I live like this???

I really do love it, but it's just not fun anymore.

ih8lakeontario- Winter time was the only time I have felt safe up here…walking up to Cogo's, walking to the junction…it was always so peaceful. I haven't left the house to walk anywhere (alone) in months now.

As my user name states, we'll thankfully be moving from the Mount in just a few short weeks.

Good ridance then, if you're not willing to fight the good fight we don't want you up here. Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out.

You would say such a thing Steve-O…I wouldn't expect anything different. Goes to show some of the lovely classy residents Mt. Washington has to offer.

Dave: Do you know what's really funny? I was in the Grand Brew Saturday morning for coffee and I overheard a gentleman talking with another man about a break-in, perhaps. I just heard snippets because I didn't want to eavesdrop. But then I heard the first man say, “I don't know. I think I'm going to move back to the North Hills.”

I couldn't help but think: “Hmm. Wonder if that's the guy who posted on this forum. . .” (smile)

That would be a long shot, I guess. There's probably more than one person in the city who longs for the quiet serenity of the suburbs. Personally — it's just too quiet out there for me. I'm a city girl through and through.

And I'll take The Mount . . . . . warts and all.

ssb70, I wish it was me that you overheard, but it wasn't…It appears that I've ruffeled some feathers here but that's not my intention. I really do love the area, and have tried to do what I can to improve it in the limited way that I can, but I've given it a couple of years and I'm just not willing to devote the rest of my life to it.

I guess the door won't hit me in the ass. That's not a reflection on the fine people up here (well, most of the people). I'm not longing for the quiet serenity of the suburbs, I just want to live in an area where I feel that my family and myself are safe. As I said, I'm torn…

I lived in Philadelphia for a number of years and I have to say I'm pretty pleased with the safety here. I can walk around toward dusk without feeling like I'm taking a big risk- the streets are pretty well lit and there are usually people out and about. I don't feel unsafe at all. While one or two cars get robbed it isn't quite the plague it was there… I accidentally left my GPS system in my car overnight a week ago and when I realized it I panicked– but it was still there! That would have NEVER happened in Philly. And there aren't all the house break-ins there were there. I think that for how affordable the neighborhood is it's a real find as far as saftey.

Molly, it's good to hear some positives about this neighborhood. I feel pretty safe too.

I lived in San Francisco for 3 years and in New York City for 3 years, and have been victimized by crime more during the past 7 years (when I moved to Mt. W) than all other places I've lived. Mostly petty annoying stuff, smashed car windows, attempts to steal my car, etc. Still, I like it here, but agree, I hate the summertime, I feel much safer when the snow flies…

Hi All! New to the Blog, but have lived in Mt Washington for about 4 years. I really do enjoy the area, I've got to know a lot of local business owners, and neighbors. As with all city areas (and even small towns too) there are people who are nicer than others.

As for the vandalism, and theft. I am also disapointed. I recently moved onto Sycamore St. and 2 weeks ago had TWO bicycles stolen. One was in an obvious area and wasn't properly secured. But the other one was in right outside by back door, which is in one of those unusual Mt Washington nooks. I was really frightened, they had to walk 2 ft from my bedroom window. And it was just brazen!

More than vandalism, more than flowers on street corners, more than new development on the ritzy Grandview Ave. I want to know what is going on with all the debris around here?!?! It seems to just pile up and pile up. I recently organized a community clean up, and though I had flyers set up for weeks before the event most of the volunteers where from other areas in the city (North Hills, Swissvale, Southside, etc) only 5 of us where from Mt Washington.

But we did a great job! Has anyone noticed how Sycamore (the hill) is looking?!

I know the garbage bags are still on the corners where I designated Public Works to pick them up, but I am dealing with that. And if need be, I will transport the bags to the appropriate facility myself.

Let me know what you think! And if you'd like to get involved!
