Grandview Scenic Byway Park
by Mountain Girl ~ January 31st, 2008. Filed under: Development, MWCDC.
The Allegheny Land Trust (ALT) has purchased an 11.3-acre parcel in the West End and added it to the Grandview Scenic Byway Park. According to an article by Post-Gazette writer Diana Nelson Jones, an area developer was eyeing it to use as a dumping ground for fill from a local construction project. Instead this parcel overlooking the West End and Route 51 will be protected, and perhaps more importantly, maintained.
Land trusts are increasingly being used as a mechanism to conserve open spaces across America. In this case, the city of Pittsburgh will own the land and the ALT holds a conservation easement, which means they will guide future development.
If you look at the Grandview Scenic Byway Park map, it appears to bump up against the land currently supporting the dilapidated Edge. Absorbing that parcel into the Park could be a way to both rid us of The Edge and appease anyone that opposes new development in that space.
Thanks to the Mt. Washington Community Development Corporation Park Resource Manager, Ilyssa Manspeizer, and the Open Spaces Committee for their continuing efforts to increase and protect the natural urban spaces in our community.

That is a wonderful, wonderful accomplishment. My thanks go to any and all who were responsible. Let us know just who they are.
Does anyone know who purchased the building at the bottom of Sweetbriar that used to be a store long ago and was most recently used for some community meetings? What do they intend to do with it?

If you know the exact address of the property on Sweetbriar, you can go to the Allegheny County Tax Assessment website and figure out who owns it. Here is the url:

The Allegheny County assessment site shows property at 406 Sweetbriar Street as being sold on 1/14/08 for $300,000 to “Sweetbriar Street LLP”. I wonder if the MWCDC knows anything more?
The “use code” on the assessment for this address is listed as Lodge, Hall/Amusement Park

my understanding is that it is going to be redeveloped into a combination of new townhomes in the lot and the building will be converted into residential lofts similar to the fox way commons development done by perkins eastman in the South Side.

Thanks for the information. Sounds like a nice development. I just hope the developers don’t destroy the rare cottonwood tree (at least rare in this area) that stands down there. The tree indicates the presence of underground water. Developers may get a surprise when digging in the area. When the cottonwood sheds its blossoms in summer it looks just like a snowstorm. Quite a sight.
On another note, it seems the Grandview Scenic Byway Park is loosing quite a chunk of itself. They are removing the side of the mountain (once known as “Dutch Hill” probably now “Dut Hill”). Since they could not blast, they are using machines. I’ve been told it is to widen the roadway below. Don’t think it was an area that could have been walked upon anyway. It is just over the hillside on Greenleaf Street.
