‘Caught Being Good’ in Mt. Washington?

The Tribune-Review and Pop City are reporting about a new program called ‘Caught Being Good’. It’s being launched by the United Way of Allegheny County and the Youth Future Commission and it is intended to counter the anti-educational message that some kids in lower income neighborhoods fall prey to in favor of staying in school.
The program has been rolled out in four neighborhoods: Braddock, the Hill District, Homewood and Northview Heights, but there are plans to expand into other neighborhoods if there is interest. This may be something that can be instituted at Ream. What do you think?
“Kids need to know that they have value to themselves and that they’re doing a good job just for the sake of doing a good job,” said Laurie Moser, project director at the United Way’s Downtown office. “They should know that the community supports them and there’s a few kind words out there for them.”
Moser hopes “Caught Being Good” will encourage adults in the neighborhoods to give children positive feedback. Children get points for helping out in their communities, being punctual, going to school every day, getting good grades and taking books out from local libraries.
“There’s so much anti-energy in the communities — anti-education and putting down of themselves,” Moser said. “We need to change that attitude.”
