Ask and ye shall receive

New FlagThe flag was indeed replaced this morning on Grandview Ave. I don’t know who is directly responsible for this, I just know that two Pittsburgh Public Works employees were spotted putting up the new flag.

Thanks to Circusvue for pointing the condition of the flag out to us and calling someone about it and thanks to Diane for providing the appropriate contact information. Final thanks goes to the City of Pittsburgh for taking a resident’s concern seriously and actually doing something to address it.

Cityguy brings up a salient point about skateboarders doing damage to the sidewalks and benches on Grandview. Apparently, it is illegal for people to skateboard on the sidewalks of any business district in Pittsburgh. As we’ve discussed in the past about littering though, these laws are difficult to enforce without erecting signs everywhere.

I hadn’t realized that that many people were skateboarding on Grandview. Has anyone ever thought about incorporating a skate park into one of the parks on Mt. Washington? Other cities around the country have built skate parks in their urban areas and the results have been positive for both skateboarders and the community. It’s definitely something to think about what with the Ream Center back up and running and offering constructive activities for kids in our neighborhood.

Did you see the article in the PG?

The last sentence sums it all up perfectly.

What they see instead is a neighborhood not quite living up to its potential.

I can’t understand why someone would stand in the way of new development. Parking problems? That is a poor excuse. Isn’t that why we have permits?

I called Jason at 311 and thanked him for the quick response to my request. We now have a new flag to be proud of flying over our Mt. Washington community. By the way, the flag belonged to the City of Pittsburgh.

    Circusvue,
Congratulations on your success! And a huge thank you for taking on this task and getting us a new flag. It’s amazing what we can get accomplished when we make a few phone calls!

i’ve never once had to even go around the block to find a parking spot in teh business district of Mt. Washington. I really don’t understand teh whole lack of parking issue, i’ve always found the Mount to be an easy place to find parking…

by the way…i think a skate park on Mt. washington would be a great idea. there are so many kids roaming the streets around here, they need a meeting space where they can all go be kids.

and finally, i am so pleased to read that this blog was responsible for actually getting something done around here! great work everyone on geting that tattered old flag replaced!

All three flags have now been replaced - the one at the top of Maple Terrace (belonging to the City of Pittsburgh), the one next to the Duquesne Incline (belonging to them) and the one next to the Monongahela Incline (belonging to Port Authority).

Apparently the strong winter winds are hard on flags as they all needed to be replaced due to their condition. Ours was not the only community with disgraceful flags flying, just look around.

circus, do you really think getting three new flags put up is an accomplishment?

I almost cant stand coming to this site anymore. When are you people going to start talkin about things that matter to us all?

  8. circusvue

O: No, not much of an accomplishment, a small one perhaps, but it certainly saved this community from a possible future embarrassment considering this is our city’s 150th anniversary and I assume lots of people will be passing through.

Are you saying that flying a tattered, torn American flag does not matter?

I do not feel that this blog is to list accomplishments but just to keep us informed as to what is going on.

Stevie, let us know what you would like to see going on. Just what do you have in mind? CircusVUE

Did the person or persons that created this site not say that they were trying to make a difference in Mt. Washington?!

A flag makes no difference to me. What about empty shops and not enough places to eat? C’mon people. Get a life.

    Steve-O,

Please don’t take this the wrong way but what are you doing (even if small) for this neighborhood? I continue to hear smart remarks from you but are you pro-active??? Just curious…

Good job on the flags as a proud American Circusvue!!!!

Many must have forgotten we are at war and have been for 5 long years, with 4,000 dead and 29,000 wounded-all heroes. Dollar cost of 529 billion . The least Mt washington can do , if flags are to be flown, is that they be flown to honor these heroes, as without them and their predecessors nothing is important. Lets fly these flags in good condition or not at all. Thanks for your efforts to get this issue to our attention.

  12. Alex (The Cat in the Hat)

Steve, these issues are being addressed in other blogs on this site.

As for the empty shops and not enough places to eat, I feel your pains. I love the places up here, but more variety would be nice. However, we can’t force business owners and developers to invest up here, we can only lure them.

We as a message board can always do things like petition for new flags, etc… If we had the money to attract new business and development, that would be awesome! We can always spend our money on the places currently up here, but it’s not doing much to attract new development.
