Art marketplace in Mt. Washington this weekend UPDATE

So apparently no one reads the posts I painstakingly put together! <sigh, I won’t take it personally. You’re probably just busy, right?> Because we’ve been getting questions about what time the marketplace and music is happening tomorrow. Here it is…again:

What: MWCDC Art Marketplace on Shiloh Street

Days: Saturdays and Sundays (weather permitting!)

Times: 12-5PM through November 1, 2009

In difficult economic times, we’re changing our behavior. We’re probably traveling less and likely not spending as much on luxury items—which makes Mt. Washington the ideal place for us to be on Saturday. Seriously. Everyone will be there. It’s the kick off of the 2nd Annual Art Marketplace on the Mount.

Artists will line Shiloh Street and sell cool, funky, AFFORDABLE art. Maybe you’re planning a party and need a unique showpiece for the foyer or it’s almost your wedding anniversary and you want to buy a one-of-a-kind something for your fabulous partner.

The marketplace will be set up every weekend through November 1st and there will be different artists and musicians in attendance every time you visit. I don’t know about you, but we’re going to make it a weekend tradition. Get up, grab a big fat cinnamon bun and a latte at the coffee shop, browse the artists’ wares and listen to some live music.

This week, it’s Irish folk rock band, Ar Eigean Gael. They’ll be playing starting at noon in the rain garden at the corner of Shiloh and Virginia. You can listen to them here. The band’s music is described as “lively, fun pub drinking, rebel yells and traditional Irish and Scottish ballads” with acoustical elements like the tin whistle, mandolin/fiddle. See, so you don’t have to wait until next St. Patrick’s Day to sing “What would you do with a drunken sailor?” and “Come out ye Black and Tans”! FUN!

Oh and if you do come, take some pictures. I came across this little project on the intertubes called Art in Cities. If you see a neat piece of art or one of our Mt. Washington murals catches your eye, snap a pic and upload it here. A group of people are doing research on how cities evolve based on the art movements in them and will eventually publish a book with the results.

Wonderful! What time is the Art and the Music?

  2. Monika

Won’t be here Saturday, but this sounds great! If I wanted to set up any of my art in the future, is there anything I should know about in advance?

  3. 15211Advocate

Monika, you have to contact the MWCDC office and get on a list of artists and pick out a date. They are located at 301 Shiloh St or here http://www.mwcdc.org their number is on that site. Thanks

This is a great program! Thanks to the MWCDC, the Mainstreet Committee, local business owners and Greg Panza for making this happen! Our community (and our visitors) will definitely benefit from this program!

  5. Chuck Wallace

I don’t think we say it enough but Greg Panza is one of the biggest assets we have in our community!!!

  6. Greg

The music starts at noon and Ar Eigan Gael will perform until 4pm this saturday. If there are any artists or musicians interesting in participating in future weekend spots, email me at gpanza@mwcdc.org. Thank you to Mountain Girl for the great post, and thanks Kim and Chuck for nice words!

  7. Leah

I understand the music starts at noon, but what time does the marketplace open? Is that noon as well?

  8. Diane

Thank you Greg, for all your hard work. You are the best! Have a fabulous Holiday Weekend. Hope to see ya on Shiloh!!

Sounds great, music and art, what a great combination. Has there been a Mt. Washington area directory published recently?

Also, do we have a Community Advisory Board or does the MWCDC function as one?

Circusvue: Explain what you mean about a Community Advisory Board?

How was the turnout for the art and music?

  12. 15211Advocate

I was there for a little on Saturday and the turnout looked decent. I think we have to remember that this isn’t the 3 Rivers Arts Festival, so you’ll never see big groups of people, but the band was great and the vendors seemed to be happy. I know I was happy when I stopped by Pack and Dogs for an Irish Setter and Dogfish 60min IPA!!

  13. Katlyn

I would like to know how to become a vendor at this marketplace, sounds awesome!

  14. Greg

The kick off was a success and we should have a full house again this weekend with some different artists so stop on by. Youre right 15211 it isnt the arts festival, but its not meant to be. But it certainly supported and enhanced one of our business district segments. In fact one business commented that it was the busiest saturday they ever had. Check out the video on http://www.vuplus.org to learn more or contact me at gpanza@mwcdc.org. thanks to all of you who came by last weekend!

    Disgusted:

A Community Advisory Board is a group of people from a certain neighborhood district who have been elected in a regular municipal election by their neighbors to represent that particular neighborhood’s needs and problems to city government. The board will also be comprised of delegate members—people who represent active community organizations in the neighborhood.

I read this on an old paper from a state legislator and wonder if it is still in existence as they also have the right to mandate a meeting within two weeks with the head of a major administrative unit of the city to discuss a specific district problem. In addition, Community Advisory Boards will meet annually with the mayor and city council to discuss problems, needs and public affairs of the district. The powers and duties of Community Advisory Boards are outlined in the Home Rule Charter, and include reviewing and advising city council and the mayor on: proposed zoning changes in the district, social and physical plans for the district and distribution of city services to the district. Is that still in existence, is it defunct, or under another name now?
