Allentown and Mt. Washington to collaborate
by Mountain Girl ~ December 11th, 2009. Filed under: Infrastructure, MWCDC, Revitalization.People have been wondering why the hilltop neighborhoods haven’t collaborated on community revitalization efforts for some time now. While there were always rumors that this would happen, The South Pittsburgh Reporter has confirmed that the Mt. Washington Community Development Corporation and the Allentown Community Development Corporation are teaming up to spur revitalization in an official capacity.
I don’t think there was ever a question about the sincere intentions of the small group of active Allentown CDC members. They simply didn’t have the capacity to tackle some of the issues that serve as barriers to business development in Allentown. In contrast, Mt. Washington has enjoyed Main Street funding for years and has staff in place to manage programming intiatives.
These neighborhoods are less than two miles apart. Competing for funds and duplicating services doesn’t make sense when resources are scarce. We share common goals and if more of us speak louder, we’ll have a better shot at obtaining adequate financial and political support to continue to improve the entire hilltop.

This is great news! I live close to Allentown and it has always seemed to be the” forgotten stepchild.” I’m glad Ms. Hackel will finally see some things come to fruition. She’s been hanging in there for years working very hard for that community.

How exciting! Judy Hackel who is ED of Allentown CDC has been helping us with events and improvements of Grandview Park for many years now. With this partnership I can see a very rewarding way of achieving our goals in both communities.
