4/10/08 Call To Action: Defeat Marriage Amendment

by 15211Advocate ~ April 10th, 2008. Filed under: Community, Events.

Marriage is everyone's right

OK 15211′ers, it’s another call to action day!!!!

The Republicans are trying to amend the State Constitution, again. For a party that is all about patriotism, this seems like the least patriotic thing to EVER do and very UN-AMERICAN. I think this is right out of the Karl Rove’s How to lie and cheat your way to win an election book. It’s a tactic to try to get the Republican base out for the elections coming up this year. An old tactic but it works for the middle of the state.

Here is the info I have. If you have the time today, please show up and support the defeat of Senate Bill 1250. We cannot have the government defining marriage and taking rights away from American citizens.

Please come to the public hearing in Pittsburgh
on Thursday, April 10th and tell Senate Committee members to vote
NO on Senate Bill 1250.

Senate Bill 1250 is a Constitutional Amendment which would ban gay marriage and civil unions in Pennsylvania. On Thursday, April 10th there will be a public hearing in Pittsburgh to discuss the impact this amendment would have on the Commonwealth. In past hearings, supporters of this discriminatory bill have been extremely active and vocal. It is crucial that we outnumber them this time around. We urgently need our members to come to the hearing so Senators know that the people of Pittsburgh don’t want our General Assembly to legislate hate.

Date and time: Thursday, April 10th, 2:00 pm

Location: Allegheny County Courthouse, Gold Room

437 Grant St., Downtown Pittsburgh

Corner of Grant and Forbes

Homosexual behavior is not an innate identity; It is a *edit*, unnatural and destructive behavior. Advancing a physically, emotionally and *edit* destructive sexual behavior is not in anyone’s best interest.

  2. Electron

Marriage is between and male and female and should be only that way. If you want to be together in some form of union so be it but do not expect the same treatment and benifits as if you are a man and women in marriage.

    Crime Watcher:

I never saw the benefit in debating whether homosexuality has a biological basis or not. It simply doesn’t matter in my opinion. Who you love and with whom you choose to share your life is a completely private matter. I guess I don’t even understand why the state ever got into the marriage business in the first place. And I have to wonder why anyone else’s sexual preferences are “physically, emotionally, and spiritually destructive” to you or anyone else other than the people engaging in them (provided those involved are consenting adults).

    Electron:

I struggle to address any comment with the word “should” in it. Says who? You? A religion?

Did you honestly think you were going to post a topic about Gay marraige and there wouldn’t be any controversy?

I’ve been watching 15211.org for a few weeks now and it fascinates me that a website that is supposed to be about the Mount openly supports and promotes a liberal political agenda (which has nothing to do with 15211) than gets upset when anyone disagrees. There are many people on Mount Washington who oppose gay marriage. There are also many Republicans. There are also many Democrats (like myself) who plan to vote for John McCain. If you want this site to be about the Mount, keep politics and religion out of it. Otherwise, screen your applicants and only let liberals apply.

  7. 15211Advocate

It’s not only an issue about human rights, it’s an issue that effect people that live on mt. washington. Whether you want to admit it to yourself or not there are gay people that live on Mt. Washington.

We do not like to see our friends being discriminated against. As I’m sure you don’t. Which is why you cannot support any legislation that takes right away from a fellow American.

That’s why we posted this and will continue to post things that we think are wrong. If you don’t agree, that’s fine. But the posts I deleted were simply hate speech and I will not let that go live on our blog. I would hope if you had a blog you would be as responsible.

Thanks for reading and good luck with that McCain vote.

  8. 15211Advocate

    also chick
what kills me is that you say you’ve been reading this site for a couple of weeks yet it takes a controversial topic like taking away human rights to get you to contribute to the site. Why is that? Do you not have anything to say? No ideas? No well thought out opinions? Instead you spend 10 minutes of your day writing a comment means nothing and offers nothing. Thanks

  9. pgh chick

What kills me is that you can’t stand anyone who disagrees with you. You claim to be so openminded, but you slam anyone who offers any opinion different from yours. Maybe the reason I haven’t contributed is that I don’t appreciate your obnoxious meaningless responses!!

  10. 15211Advocate

Well I do appreciate people who disagree with me and have a point to their arguments. What I don’t appreciate are meaningless comments. If someone disagrees with me and has a valid argument and just isn’t spewing hate speech or talking smack just to be controversial, I will respond with the utmost respect. Please take a few minutes and go back and read all of the comments to all of the posts for the past 8 months. Oh, and thanks for reading! And thanks for the comments. If you find me obnoxious please explain.

  11. Steve-O

Looks like I have been replaced by an even bigger jack-ass.

Thanks pghchick for taking the a-hole spotlight off of me for a while.

  12. Mountain Girl

    pgh chick:

Several people contribute to this blog and I myself didn’t delete those comments because I didn’t think it was necessary. Opposing views should be welcomed. I sense Advocate was coming from a genuine place though and was concerned about anyone reading this blog and taking the comments to heart. I suppose we’ll agree to disagree on this one. As for your observation about this post not being relevant to the 15211 area, I respectfully disagree as well.

    MG

  13. pgh chick

I didn’t say that the post wasn’t relevant to the 15211 area. I said that promotion of a particular political agenda didn’t belong on it.

  14. Diane

gee, I wish we had received more feedback on volunteering in 15211 this Sunday, as we just did on defeat marriage amendment?!

  15. 15211Advocate

    Tell me about it D.

Speaking of Volunteering, I’ve just created a cleanup forum in the message boards that might help organize some volunteers for “cleanups” Check it out under the Latest News section.

pghchick, I feel it deserves attention, not only in the 15211 but in all of PA…. so we will respectfully disagree.

  16. 15211Advocate

At the request of the other administrators on this site I have reposted the initial comments that set off this discussion today. We don’t want to censor our readers (remember there is a message board if you want to start your own discussions).

That being said I hope anyone that reads the two comments that were re-approved, understand that those are the opinions of the commentors and not 15211.org.

I personally feel sorry for them. Although I do not agree with the comments I will leave them up in all of their glory for our readers to see. If people want to spout off and embarrass themselves, that’s their choice I guess.

I will, however, take any reference to religion out of any comment on this site. We have stated that before and it is the policy of this site. Politics are free game, but religion discussion is not permitted.

  17. Steve-O

There is a poll being conducted at the PG about this.

And vote NO to this constitutional amendment that strips United States and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania tax paying citizens the right to get married OR have any equivalent such as domestic partnership. This is not JUST a bill…this is a CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT!

  18. Come Together Right Now

Separation of “church” and “state”. Domestic partnerships whether “common law” or “whatever” should have the same rights as those who decide to get the “paper” for marriage…

We should not judge - that should be left to…

  19. 15211Advocate

    …. the individual.

  20. Electron

There should not be any rights to common law or whatever for me you do not do it right dont do it Look around and see what not doing it right got us from education to our state of affairs.

  21. Mountain Girl

    OK Electron:

You might force me to take back what I said yesterday and start editing like Advocate.

First of all, I don’t quite understand what you’re getting at here. I think you’re saying that homosexuality is not “right”; therefore, people that are gay should not be afforded the same rights as heterosexuals? “Right” and “wrong” are subjective. Obviously, I don’t agree with you.

And how exactly do gay people affect our educational systems and standing in world affairs? I attribute those failings to lack of intelligence, foresight, empathy, introspection, and every other positive attribute of a leader you can think of that the people in power are lacking.

  22. Ice Cream Lover

Thank you site administrators for posting about this issue–it is a real hot button topic for myself. I have family members and several very close friends who are out and we will all be affected if this ridiculous, hateful, bigoted “constitutional” amendment gathers support. I place “constitutional” in quotes because if this were to actually pass, it would be the first time in history that the constitution would be taking rights away from Americans, rather than bestowing rights on Americans. Those of you who support this amendment will be remembered by history as being in the same camp as those who tried to use the Constitution as a mechanism for preventing women and blacks from voting. Think about this, do you want your grandchildren and great-grandchildren having to explain to their friends what bigots their ancestors were when we all eventually live in a country where gay and non-gay Americans are entitled to the same rights and freedoms?

  23. banshees013

Ice Cream Lover - thank you for your insightful response. I wanted to reply but I wasn’t sure where to start.

I will address one earlier comment, that being “…it fascinates me that a website that is supposed to be about the Mount openly supports and promotes a liberal political agenda (which has nothing to do with 15211) ….”. First of all, I don’t believe that supporting equal rights = “liberal”, just as i don’t believe that “conservative” = upper class white rich folks who believe in the right to bear semi-automatics. An individual’s personal, consensual relationship is no one else’s business. Not the state’s or the federal government’s. As for the ‘institution of marriage’, you can keep it. But what is it that is so threatening about two people of the same gender sharing a life that is recognized as a committed partnership? This has a lot to do with the Mount because the Mount is an integral part of a diverse and spectacular city. It has a lot to do with the Mount because (believe it or not) it has been a popular place for gay people to reside.

And remember, statistics have consistently shown that 1 out of every 10-15 people are gay. Count your friends and family - then think of how you would like them to be treated by our society if they are in that 10%.

  24. banshees013

    P.S. - PLEASE VOLUNTEER!

  25. Livin' on Da Mount

And why doesnt anyone get upset about the damage done to the “institution of marraige” by TV show’s like “Who wants to marry a millioniare” or “The bachelor”

those very popular shows, outwardly cheapen marriage - for a profit …and the general population LOVEs it….

    just a thought …

Me - my marriage is not affected (plus or minus) by other people’s marraiges…

ANd I dont think anyone is tryign to get the catholics to let them get married in a church, no one needs a “religious blessing”, just some basic human rights.

If I die, my wife gets my insurance, and can take title to our home. Or if she is in the hospital, I can visit her because she is family. Or we can share health insurance.

    We’re talking basic stuff here…

one last parting thought - - my dad always said - “The conservatives are all about small government - just small enough to fit in my bedroom :)

  26. Sxlpgh

Wow, This is interesting. I was just told about this website, and this is what I find. A bit healthy in some aspects and a bit over the top in others. Let us throw out the statistics because they are worthless and the hate because it never solved anything. Politics mean nothing, they are the same words from opposite sides of the fence , and opinions are only that. Homosexuality is an anomaly within any species. Very few living things, with this type of brain malfunction, procreate, which at the end of the day, is what we are all about.
The Constitution, was a document designed by brilliant men to protect people from other people , from Government and sometimes from themselves. It was not intended to take rights away from the individual to grace us with rights. The political process will follow along the same road it has tread for well over 200 years, and people will indirectly and in a piecewise way govern themselves. – So cut the crap, and lets make 15211 a better place.
